SpeedyMirror,一款老美的免费CDN产品,虽然在我们国内的使用效果一般,但作为一款备用产品或者单纯的海外加速工具,还是比较不错的。但很可惜,就在刚刚,邮箱收到一封SpeedyMirror发来的(致所有SpeedyMirror用户)邮件,正文第一段话就是:

This email is sent to all Speedy Mirror users.
I would like to give speedymirror.com to anybody who wants it,FOR FREE. Read on.
Despite all expectations, Speedy Mirror is a project created by one single person – me. No employees, no staff, nothing. Just me and the servers. I made the web design, I rent servers in different countries and I wrote the mirroring system from scratch. But no matter how much gifted and skilled technical professional I am, I suck big time in marketing.


其实挺惊讶,原来这么一项“庞大”的服务,从美工到技术,再到客服,竟然是一个人在做,先不说各种技术的难度,单就这么长一段时间的“坚持”就够被人佩服的了!不过信中作者也说出了整个事件的经过:

The service started because a client of mine requested me to develop it. He paid all the server costs and for that reason he had all CDN services for free with Speedy Mirror. Like unlimited transfer. Since all costs were covered, selling the CDN services to others meant NET profit for me, so far so good. I wasn’t able to sell the service to huge amount of people but I didn’t care much since I had enough to cover the costs. Later on, I lost that client (he sold his entire business to someone for $3 million, and the new owner had his own solution).

投资人变卖了自己的资产,所有的对SpeedyMirror的间接投资也化为乌有,所以作者在资金压力下想出售这个东东。如果你是一个技术爱好者,喜欢鼓捣CDN,这将是笔不错的买卖,但还是先看看SpeedyMirror当下的盈利状况吧:

Total cost to run entire Speedy Mirror now is somewhere around $530 per month for the two servers. Total income per month is somewhere around 1 sale ($35) per month. That’s really bad.

就像作者所说的:“That’s really bad”。真是够糟糕的,看来作者本身并不善于市场营销,只是单纯对技术比较精通。因为按说SpeddyMirror靠免费CDN起家,但有收费项目,总不至于入不敷出,何况作者在下文中说现在有2000多免费用户。不过对于此次“免费出售”,作者也有自己的想法:

– I will transfer the domain to you
– I will outsource technical part for you for free!
– you will pay for server costs and you will earn all the cash
– you decide when new nodes are purchased, if any
– you will do the marketing etc
– if there are sales and the service starts earning big money, I may request 10% of NET profit.

注意最后一条:如果此项服务最终开始盈利,那么作者将要求得到净利润的10%!嗯,作者还算不错:未盈利前会尽力帮助你运作,无聊从技术还是从经验上,这些都是无偿的,只是在盈利后才取得10%报酬。
